Topics getting the most attention in Lake County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Dog shelter leadership and operations
After a rough summer with HVAC failures and operational problems, the county has hired Christian Courtwright from the Humane Society as the new Dog Warden starting October 30. Commissioners stressed high standards of care, adoptions first, and returning lost dogs.
Safety Center construction progress
Administrator Jason Boyd reported the jail's front facade is finished, masonry on the juvenile court side is nearly wrapped, and third-floor holding cells arrived from Georgia and are being installed.
Next Gen 911 dispatch staffing requirement
Two contracts will modernize the county's 911 center: AI software that reviews 100% of medical dispatch calls (versus the state's 2% minimum) and a Motorola cloud-based call-handling system connecting to the state's ESInet. Central Communications handles about 90,000 911 calls a year.
Federal benefit program changes coming to JFS caseload
New federal rules took effect this month: the work-requirement age rose from 55 to 65, the child exemption dropped to under 14, and veterans lost exemptions. Residents can call 844-640-6446 with questions.
Dog shelter cooling system
The shelter's aging geothermal cooling system failed during last week's heat wave, forcing dogs to be relocated. A commercial cooling unit arrives this week, backup cooling measures are in place, and commissioners are taking direct control of shelter operations going forward.
Jail Medical Services Contract with University Hospitals
The county revamped how inmates get medical care: UH supplies a doctor and physician assistant while the county provides five nurses. The Sheriff says it saves about $1.5 million a year with no service cuts and reduces litigation risk.
Overdose Awareness and Recovery Support
Lake County officially recognizes August 31 as Overdose Awareness Day, with the ADAMHS Board hosting its second annual Recovery Concert of Hope on August 30 in Willoughby. Commissioners stressed that addiction touches nearly every family.
Child Abuse Prevention Month
The county proclaimed April 2026 Child Abuse Prevention Month; Children Services responded to more than 1,500 neglect or abuse calls in 2025 and will plant blue pinwheels April 8.
SNAP/EBT scam warning
The state is seeing more EBT card security problems, so JFS is urging SNAP recipients to download the Connect EBT app and lock their cards when not in use.
Dissolution of the Family and Children First Council
The county dissolved the council under new state law, saying OhioRise and other organizations will take over serving children. Commissioner Beverage expressed concern about shrinking state and federal funding but pledged the work continues in another form.
